Time is running out for Chivas Guadalajara to seal automatic qualification to the 2020 Liga MX Apertura quarter-finals, but a win at home to Cruz Azul on Sunday would go a long way to closing the gap.
Los Rojiblancos are seventh in the standings and will guarantee a first-round play-off place if they can seal a third straight win at home, but Cruz Azul came out on top when they last visited the Estadio Akron in February.
La Maquina looked well oiled and were playing like first-place contenders not long ago, but rust has begun to set in after their form went of a cliff, failing to win any of their last three games. Cruz Azul have dropped to fourth and are on the verge of losing their place among the automatic quarter-final qualifiers, while Chivas look to move to within a point of their opponents on Sunday.
Following a bumpy run on the road in July and August, Victor Manuel Vucetich’s side have improved across the board and lost only one of their last eight games.
Chivas are undefeated in their last five matches at home (three wins, two draws) and most recently beat Atlas 3-2 in the Clasico Tapatio, where Uriel Antuna, Jose Juan Macias and Isaac Brizuela each capped off some dazzling team manoeuvres:
What TV Channel is Chivas-Cruz Azul on?
You can watch Chivas vs. Cruz Azul at Estadio Akron via Telemundo, FSN (Canada) at 7:30 p.m. ET on Sunday. You can live stream Liga MX matches on fuboTV.
Cruz Azul, on the other hand, haven’t been able to buy a goal of late and failed to score in their last three games. Two of those goals came at home (against America and Tigres). Uruguay international Jonathan Rodriguez is still joint-top scorer in Liga MX this season with 10 goals to his name. It's no surprise though La Maquina’s three-game drought has coincided with his form faltering.
Robert Siboldi’s men are lacking in confidence but will take comfort in the fact they’ve won their last two meetings with Chivas. These teams met in the final of the Copa por Mexico on July 20, when it was Rodriguez who came up with a contention penalty winner in injury time, via TUDN:

Matchups between Chivas and Cruz Azul aren’t strictly defined as any sort of Clasico, though their meetings are still revered as two of the most decorated teams in Mexico.
The pair are polar opposites ahead of Week 15 when it comes to form, with Chivas in the ascendancy while doubts creep in regarding Cruz Azul’s stamina. A win for either team at the Estadio Akron will have a big impact on the top-four race and just where each club can expect to begin their post-season (should Chivas qualify, as expected).
