Chelsea travel to Old Trafford on Saturday having failed to beat Manchester United on their own soil since May 2013, and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side can leapfrog above the Blues with a home win.
The Red Devils overcame Paris Saint-Germain 2-1 thanks to a late goal from Marcus Rashford when they opened their UEFA Champions League campaign on Tuesday, while Chelsea were held 0-0 at home to Sevilla.
Frank Lampard’s visitors beat United 3-1 when these teams met at Wembley during last season’s FA Cup semi-finals. He was pleased to get his first win over Solskjaer as a manager in that fixture, especially after his former playing adversary had built a healthy lead in their head-to-head:
The two teams have undergone big changes since then, and United enter this clash in superior form having won five of their last six games across all competitions.
The sole defeat among those matchups was a 6-1 hammering at Tottenham Hotspur’s hands before the international break, though Solskjaer looks to have corrected United’s course since then.

Chelsea’s recent record pales in comparison considering they’ve won only two of their last six. The most recent league outing saw them surrender the lead twice to draw 3-3 at home to Southampton. Their only away win in three attempts this term was the season opener at Brighton & Hove Albion (all competitions).
Billy Gilmour is the sole injury concern for Lampard after goalkeeper Edouard Mendy returned to play, giving the Blues an almost clean bill of health ahead of a key fixture.
Anthony Martial will move back out of United’s XI on Saturday as he serves a domestic ban for the red card he received in the home humiliation against Spurs. Captain Harry Maguire and forward Mason Greenwood missed the win at PSG due to injury, but both could be in contention to return to the squad in Week 6.

Axel Tuanzebe starred in Maguire’s absence against PSG’s attackers and could be retained even if the England international comes back into the team.
The visit of Chelsea could also bring a Manchester United debut for deadline-day signing Edinson Cavani, who garnered attention after he was spotted advising Tuanzebe ahead of the meeting with his old comrades at the Parc des Princes:
Cavani, 33, has faced Chelsea on eight occasions—more than any other English club in his career—and lost just two of those, once while at Napoli (March 2012) and again with PSG (April 2014). He’s been on the winning side against the Blues four times, scoring three goals and recording two assists in total.
Chelsea endured a run of six straight meetings without a win over United prior to July, but Lampard will hope that victory is part of a new trend rather than the anomaly.
