In almost every other season since 2009, the Grand Prix of St. Petersburg is the opener of the IndyCar season. With just about everything else in 2020, the norms are all thrown out the window. It is usually a spring race and now it's going to be an October race. This season, it will serve as the last race of the 2020 campaign. The 2019 St. Petersburg Grand Prix was won by Josef Newgarden, which was the first time an American has won this race since 2008.

The race that was supposed to start March 15 right when everything in this country shutdown, will be the 14th race of the season shortened from 17. There will be 20,000 fans in attendance to watch the IndyCar Champion decided in this race. Scott Dixon is leading the pack with a 32-point advantage heading into this race. Dixon is one of the greatest drivers in IndySeries history with five championships. He will be fending off the defending St. Petersburg champion Newgarden. This is the 15th season in a row that will be decided on the last day of the season.
